Nevada National Currency Bank Note Issuing Banks - The Nevada Sixteen

  • First National Bank of Nevada, Austin, Nevada

Chartered in 1865 and lasting only 4 years to 1869, This bank was the first bank chartered in Nevada.
This charter only issued Original Series $5, $10 and $20 notes.
There are no notes known on the bank. A note from this bank would be a major find.
If a note were to be found on this bank it's value would be enough to buy a small house in the state.

  • First National Bank of Carson City, Nevada

This bank lasted less than two years between late 1908 and 1910.
They issued a minuscule number of blue seals and today only one is known.
One of the best titles in Nevada this bank has tremendous allure.
A new note on this bank would be a fantastic discovery!.

  • Copper National Bank of Ely, Nevada

In operation from 1909 through 1925 this bank seems under reported for the issue and time span.
Over 7,000 sheets of blue seals were issued but only 4 are known in collectors hands.

  • First National Bank of Elko, Nevada

Chartered in 1905 and lasted to the end of the issuing period in 1935.
They issued red seals, blue seals and small sized brown seals.
This is the second most common bank in Nevada after the Farmers and Merchants of Reno.

  • First National Bank of Ely, Nevada

From 1907 through 1935 this bank cranked out the currency issuing over 1 million dollars in notes.
For all that issue however they have low survival rates.
The bank issued red seals, blue seals and small sized brownseals.
No red seals are known but it would be a nice note to find!

  • Ely National Bank of Ely, Nevada

From 1909 to 1935 this bank issued blue seals and small sized brown seals.
With nearly 9000 sheets issued this bank should be easier than it is.
There are 2 uncut sheets known from the bank.

  • Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Eureka, Nevada

Chartered in 1920 but didn't issue notes until small sized notes came out in 1929.
This is a relatively common bank for Nevada but the name is pretty good.

  • First National Bank of Goldfield, Nevada

In operation from 1908 through 1913.
Issued red seals and blue seals.
One of the better titles in Nevada and super rare with a single note known.

  • First National Bank of Lovelock, Nevada

For 30 years between 1905 and 1935 this bank issued red seals, blue seals and small sized brown seals.
A red seal from this bank would be a great note.
Lovelock NV, Loveland Co & OH and Lovelady, Texas would be an interesting collection.

  • McGill National Bank of McGill, Nevada

From 1909 to 1934 this bank issued blue seals and small sized brown seals.
This bank is not uncommon in small sized by the numbers but they are still hard to buy.

  • First National Bank of Reno, Nevada

The oldest chartered bank in Reno operating from 1880 to 1896.
They only issued series of 1875 notes in $20's only.
This bank didn't issue much over 2000 sheets and only 2 are now known.
The last sale on this bank was in 1955 when an AU $20 sold for a princely $355.00

  • Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Reno, Nevada

Lasting 26 years between 1903 and 1929 this is Nevada most common bank.
This bank issued red seals, blue seals and small sized brown seals.
While notes on this bank are relatively common a red seal would still be a nice note!

  • Nixon National Bank of Reno, Nevada

Another prolific Nevada issuer this bank operated from 1906 to 1932.
It issued red seals, blue seals and small sized brown seals.
This bank issued red seals in the $50 and $100 denomination only one of which is known today.
A $50 or $100 red seal on this bank would be a major find!

  • First National Bank of Rhyolite, Nevada

This is the one of the most storied bank in Nevada lasting only a brief while between 1907 and 1910.
The town of Rhyolite sprang up and was gone in the space of 10 years.
By the time most of the other banks in Nevada were issuing small sized notes the bank at Rhyolite was a crumbling shell.
The bank issued red seals and blue seals, either of which would be a major find and would be written up in all the
numismatic periodicals. If you have one of these notes please send me a scan!!!

  • Nevada First National Bank of Tonopah, Nevada

from 1907 to 1932 this bank operated, printing 1902 red seals, blue seals and small sized notes.
This is another bank that issued $50 and $100 red seals.
There is one #1 red seal on the bank but it seems to have circulated as it's listed in VG condition.

  • First National Bank of Winnemucca, Nevada

From 1886 to 1932 this bank lasted quite a while. They issued 1882 brownbacks, red seals, blue seals and small sized currency.
I am not sure which would be the better note from here... an 1882 brownback or a $50 or $100 red seal.
I would love to see any of them! This is my favorite city in Nevada because my mother and I would stop here on the drive from California to Idaho.
